Midlothian Mace Created

Local pupils design a Midlothian Mace to cross the authority

Midlothian Mace

A Commonwealth ceremonial mace, designed and carved by talented S2 pupils at Penicuik High, has been officially handed over for the first leg of its journey around Midlothian.

The S2 pupils passed the mace, which features symbols of the county such as mining and the Midlothian leaf, to pupils from Sacred Heart Primary School.

During the official Walk to School Week from Monday 12 May, the mace will be carried and handed on to primary schools as part of the inter-schools walks.

The primary pupils will then hand the mace over to residents of a local care home to feature in the annual Ageing Well Senior Games. Its final destination will be with our Active Schools team who will use the mace at various Commonwealth Games inspired events during the summer.

The money for the inter-generational events comes from the Celebrate fund. A total of £4,490 was granted to Midlothian by the four Scottish Lottery distributors, Big Lottery Fund, Creative Scotland, Heritage Lottery Fund and sportscotland.

The fund is to support communities across Scotland as they celebrate and are inspired by the Commonwealth Games.

Councillor Bob Constable, the cabinet member for education, said: “It’s wonderful to see an initiative like this, which involves all age groups and numerous disciplines from the arts to sport, come together.

“Well done to everyone involved. I’m sure all the events will be great fun and all the more inspiring with the mace in tow.”
