Lasswade Sports Personality of the Year 2018

Lasswade High School in partnership with Active Schools hosted their third annual Sports Personaity of the Year Awards 2018!

SPOTY 2018

Lasswade High School in partnership with Active Schools hosted the Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) awards for the third year. The awards evening took place on Thursday 26th April at Lasswade High School and welcomed over 300 guests to the assembly hall to celebrate and promote sporting success within the school.

SPOTY 2018 was organised by the school’s Sports Council which includes Midlothian council’s Active School co-ordinators and Lasswade HS PE staff.  Martyn Ewart from Forth One did a great job as host and helped bring the buzz and professionalism to the night that the BBC would be proud of.

There were four special guests from the world of sport. Rugby player Mark Bennett, Skier Anna Vincenti, Skier Murray Buchan and Hearts footballer and former Lasswade High School pupil Ross Callachan, who offered advice to pupils partaking in sport; “It is really important to listen to the advice your coaches are giving you as that is the key to improving. I’ve seen lots of talented footballers over the years who have not reached their potential because they did not listen and put into practice what their coaches were telling them.”  These guests and their comments provided a source of inspiration for students within the audience.

There were awards for player of the year in football, rugby, gymnastics and netball. Future Starz awards were given for pupils who have shown they have excellent talent and have the potential to achieve great things within their sport.  Three awards for team of the year were given out; Bronze - U15 Rugby Team, Silver - S2 Boys Football Team and the winner of the Gold award went to U15 Boys Basketball Team with their coach Mr Attinasi taking Coach of the Year.

Dancers from the school performed two excellent dances to get both halves of the show off to a great start.  Over 1200 voted to select our 4 finalists for the main award - Jodi Millar (Irish Dance), Hannah Darling (Golf), Lauren Windsor (Taekwondo) and Zak Stewart (Basketball).

After all 4 finalist nominees showcased their talents by teaching the PE staff some moves, the main award was revealed.  The Lasswade High School Sports Personality of the Year 2018 winner with only 2 votes in it went to ZAK STEWART for his achievements in Basketball.

Headteacher Campbell Hornell said “It is great to see all the sporting talents of our pupils and what they have achieved over the year. I congratulate them all.”

Mr Hornell congratulated the winner Zak saying “Every morning I come into school very early and every morning I see Zak practicing his basketball skills. It is that dedication to his sport that makes him a winner.”

A great evening celebrating sporting success at Lasswade High School - thank you to our host Marty (Forth One), Miss Mackay and the PE Staff, Active Schools, our special guests, KIC Dance team, lighting and sound team,  our sponsors - Lasswade Parent Council and the 200 club and finally the Lasswade Sports Council for all of their hard work organising the event.
