Lasswade High Schools in partnership with Active Schools hosted their second ever Sports Personality of the Year Awards 2017!

SPOTY 2017

Lasswade High School in partnership with Active Schools hosted the Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) awards for the second year. The awards evening took place on Thursday 27th April at Lasswade High School and welcomed over 300 guests to the assembly hall to celebrate and promote sporting success within the school.

The awards show was ably hosted by former pupil and Forth One Radio presenter Mark Martin who added to the buzz and excitement of the evening with a very witty and fun performance.

There were four special guests from the world of sport. The captain of the women’s Scottish Rugby team Lisa Martin, Judo Commonwealth Gold medalist Euan Burton, Judo Olympic Silver medalist Gemma Burton and Hearts and Scotland Under 21 footballer John Soutar.

The school choir got the evening underway with a quite brilliant performance and there was also an outstanding demonstration of the school’s dancing abilities providing outstanding entertainment and giving a sample of the schools many talents.

There were awards for player of the year in football, rugby, gymnastics, netball, dance, american football, swimming, hockey and basketball. Future Stars awards were given for pupils who have shown they have excellent talent and have the potential to achieve great things within their sport.

The Team of the Year was awarded to the Under 15 Football team for their achievements this year. Other awards included pupil, staff volunteer, alongside coach of the Year awards.

Asked by host Mark Martin what it takes to get to the top level in sport, professional footballer John Soutar said

“It is a case of dedication. Whatever the sport, and as shown by my fellow guests, it is about dedicating yourself to your sport and working on your talent. Sacrificing nights out with friends to work hard and to achieve what you want in sport.”

Head Teacher Campbell Hornell said

“It is the team ethos in sport that is so great, that helps and inspires someone to achieve either as an individual or as a team. And importantly that same ethos can be, and is, applied across the school and across the curriculum here at Lasswade High School.”

Four nominees were shortlisted for the main SPOTY award; Zak Stewart (Basketball), Ethan McVicker (Rugby), Olivia Harris (Rugby) and Cameron Duff (Karate), who all had the chance to showcase their talents on the night. The evening was an amazing success with the SPOTY award going to Olivia Harris for her amazing achievements in Rugby – a true role model within the school. We look forward to SPOTY 2018 and all the achievements and success it has to showcase.
