A great evening at Lasswade High School, celebrating sporting successes from the year!
Lasswade High School in partnership with Active Schools hosted the Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) awards. The awards evening took place on Tuesday 19th of March at Lasswade High School and welcomed teachers, parents, VIP’s and guests to the assembly hall to celebrate and promote sporting success within the school. Lasswade HS PE staff, Sarah McKay and Lasswade Active School’s Coordinator, Katie McPherson, organised the event with school pupils from the school’s sport council offering help and support. With Lasswade HS parent council supplying teas and coffees for the half time break.
Mark Martin, Edge Edinburgh radio station host, done a fantastic job of hosting the ceremony on the evening and really got the crowd engaged. Dancers from Upbeat dance company performed to kick off the event and excite the crowd after the half-time break. Whilst four special guests from the sporting industry brought a real buzz to the evening. Gary Locke, a former hearts football player and successful coach for a range of premiership sides. Simon flockhart, a high level basketball player who has captained Scotland in European championships. Michael Jones and Luke Crosbie, Edinburgh Rugby Club professional players, Michael playing for Scotland U20’s and Luke Crosbie playing in the Senior Six Nations team for Scotland. With both Michael and Gary being former Lasswade High School pupils, it really highlighted how the school can produce such fantastic talent, inspiring all the pupils in the audience.
There were awards given for player of the year in football, rugby, netball, basketball, along with many other sports. Elite Performer awards were given out to pupils who were achieving success within their sport out-with the school. A team of the year was awarded the Senior Girls Football team who are on track to secure the Scottish schools cup for the third year running. Whilst some of the other awards were given out to coach of the year and staff volunteer of the year. Eilidh Armstrong, a member of the Active Schools Leadership Academy, was awarded pupil volunteer of the year for all her efforts within the school this year. Notably, Active Schools Coordinator, Judith Clyne-Parker, was awarded an award for Outstanding Contribution to the school for her many years of devotion to the school events and extra-curricular activities.
Over 1600 pupils voted for the finalists of the main award, Sports Personality of the Year, the 4 finalists- Cameron Efole (basketball), Lucy Stevenson (football), Cameron Sanders (football) and Harry Jackaman (rugby) took to the stage on the evening to perform challenges against their teachers before the main award was announced. Harry Jackaman took home the prestigious award, for his achievements in rugby, breaking into the Scotland youth squads.
A fantastic evening celebrating all the great sporting success of Lasswade High School – a huge thank you much go to Miss Mckay and the PE staff, Active Schools, our special guests, upbeat dance, lighting and sound team, Lasswade Parent council and the Lasswade Sports Council. The night would not have been such a success without the support from everyone!
