Lasswade High School in partnership with Active Schools hosted the Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) awards. The awards evening took place on Tuesday 19th of March at Lasswade High School and welcomed teachers, parents, VIP’s and guests to the assembly hall to celebrate and promote sporting success within the school. Lasswade HS PE staff, Sarah McKay and Lasswade Active School’s Coordinator, Katie McPherson, organised the event with school pupils from the school’s sport council offering help and support. With Lasswade HS parent council supplying teas and coffees for the half time break.

Mark Martin, Edge Edinburgh radio station host, done a fantastic job of hosting the ceremony on the evening and really got the crowd engaged. Dancers from Upbeat dance company performed to kick off the event and excite the crowd after the half-time break. Whilst four special guests from the sporting industry brought a real buzz to the evening. Gary Locke, a former hearts football player and successful coach for a range of premiership sides. Simon flockhart, a high level basketball player who has captained Scotland in European championships. Michael Jones and Luke Crosbie, Edinburgh Rugby Club professional players, Michael playing for Scotland U20’s and Luke Crosbie playing in the Senior Six Nations team for Scotland. With both Michael and Gary being former Lasswade High School pupils, it really highlighted how the school can produce such fantastic talent, inspiring all the pupils in the audience.

There were awards given for player of the year in football, rugby, netball, basketball, along with many other sports. Elite Performer awards were given out to pupils who were achieving success within their sport out-with the school. A team of the year was awarded the Senior Girls Football team who are on track to secure the Scottish schools cup for the third year running. Whilst some of the other awards were given out to coach of the year and staff volunteer of the year.
