Lasswade Active Schools P6/7 Basketball Event
Active Schools, Lasswade High School & partner basketball clubs work together to put on transition basketball clubs and festival!
OVERVIEW
This term Active Schools Lasswade area expanded their sport transition programme to include basketball. After the success of the inter-school transition football, Active Schools worked closely with 4 local primary schools and Lasswade High School to offer basketball in a similar format.
The aim was to provide a fun opportunity for local young people to get back together, get active and to meet some of the people they will be starting high school with. This project involved an inter-school basketball festival with free, extra-curricular training sessions set up in the primary schools taking part.
FREE, EXTRA-CURRICULAR TRAINING SESSIONS
- During this term (Jan-Feb), Active Schools have worked with 4 local schools to establish a P6/7 school basketball team.
- This involved recruiting staff and parent volunteers to coach the teams during free extra-curricular sessions.
- Active Schools & local clubs helped to provide resources to support these in school sessions.
INTER-SCHOOL BASKETBALL FESTIVAL
- The term finished with a friendly Active Schools inter-school basketball festival on Tuesday 7th February.
- Lasswade High School hosted this event, with some of their senior leadership pupils supporting the event on the day.
- Four schools, with 8 teams, signed up to the programme with 40 pupils attending the event with staff members & helpers cheering them on.
- Although a score was kept, the focus was on participation, giving pupils a chance to play with other schools in friendly games.
It was great to see the skills local pupils had learned at their training sessions and to see them getting a chance to play basketball for their school & meeting future peers in this fun tournament!
SUPPORT
Lasswade High School
- Lasswade HS supported the event as many of the P7 pupils will be transitioning up to the secondary school after the summer break.
- Miss Park (Lasswade PE) supported the event along with LHS’s senior leadership pupils who helped set up and supported during the matches.
High Flyers & City of Edinburgh Basketball Club
- High Flyers’, Gavin Menzies and City of Edinburgh Basketball club’s Katie McPherson refereed all games and offered a pathway to continue basketball in a community club setting.
- Katie also provided useful resources which were used by the volunteers running their school’s training sessions.
IMPACT
- The opportunity to take part in this event saw 4 free basketball clubs run, allowing over 60 pupils to participate in extra-curricular basketball.
- These clubs were led by 4 staff members who kindly gave up their time to support pupils in their preparation for this festival.
On behalf of Active Schools and the pupils who took part in these sessions, we would like to thank these volunteers!
Great collaboration from Active Schools, partner Basketball clubs, local primary schools, Lasswade High School staff & pupils which led to a fantastic morning of basketball that was enjoyed by all involved!
