Recognising the fantastic contribution by volunteers!
Our Active Schools Spotlight Award recognises the hard work, commitment and contribution a volunteer has made!
We want to say a huge thank you to these two awesome volunteers for giving up their time to deliver clubs for pupils here in Midlothian.
Stuart McClay runs the Dalkeith High School S2 Boys Football Team and Shannon Armour runs the Gymnastics Clubs at Lawfield Primary.
Their contribution means we have more clubs on offer to pupils, and they provide the children and young people with more opportunities to participate in activities and try new sports!
Stuart McClay:
Stuart says “It's hard to measure what I get from volunteering. I get so much enjoyment from my time coaching. The satisfaction from being part of the team, seeing the bonds forming between players, and seeing the players grow and develop.
“We win and lose together as a group. I especially like that the players will be good friends as they grow into young adults, and I've had a small part in facilitating that.”
Stuart has coached the team, arranged fixtures against other schools and also helped source school strips.
Shannon Armour:
Shannon is a teacher at Lawfield and runs the Gymnastics club after school, offering it to different classes each term to give as many pupils as possible an opportunity to try out a new sport at school.
“I volunteered because I believe gymnastics is an excellent way for children to build confidence, develop their co-ordination and to enhance their social skills. I like being able to see the children develop skills that you may not necessarily see in the classroom.
“It's great to have the opportunity to build positive relationships with children across the whole school,” says Shannon.
