Hockey Festival Oct '23

On Wednesday 25th October, Active Schools held their first annual Hockey Festival, where they welcomed a record number 18 schools from across Midlothian to the Primary Hockey Festival.  The hockey festival is supported by Eskvale Hockey and Scottish Hockey, encouraging primary school pupils to take part and try out hockey with their peers in a friendly competitive event held at Lasswade High School astro.

Over 21 teams involving over 200 pupils from 18 Midlothian schools participated in the round robin tournament organised by the Active Schools team.  There was lots of impressive hockey skills, teamwork and great sportsmanship on display!

Volunteer coaches from Eskvale Hockey Club, Scottish Hockey representatives and senior pupils from both Dalkeith High School and St Davids High School umpired the 4 pitches and supported the event. We want to say a huge thank you to all our partners for helping with this event.

Eskvale Hockey provide an important link to the local community club as part of our ongoing work ensuring there are school-to-club pathways in sport.  Eskvale Hockey Club will continue their work with Active schools this year to support staff led clubs and help provide schools with an experience of extra-curricular hockey including a club experience which strengthens the school to community club link.

Active Schools offered hockey coaching training on 7th Sept for school staff members looking to upskill and train teams through extra-curricular hockey clubs in the lead up to the event.  This training was led by Scottish Hockey and Eskvale Hockey and involved 8 schools and 15 staff members who all led a minimum of 3 sessions back in their schools – providing fun free hockey sessions for pupils in their schools and a chance for pupils to learn new skills and work together as a team ahead of the festival.

Results from each pitch:

Winning teams – Pitch 1=Cornbank,  Pitch 2=Woodburn, Pitch 3 =St Marys & Pitch 4=Strathesk.

Well done to everyone that was involved in this event.
