From 30 September to 5 October Midlothian Active Schools will be supporting Scottish Women & Girls in Sport Week, which is led by the Scottish Government’s Women and Girls in Sport Advisory Board.

The aim of the week is to raise awareness of increasing opportunities in sport and physical activity among women and girls, and highlighting the solutions to overcoming the barriers to participation.

In Midlothian we have a focus on Girls Football, with girls only Active Schools clubs running in the Lasswade and Penicuik cluster.

In a year when the Scottish Women’s National team have qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup we at Active Schools are focused on increasing participation at grassroots level by allowing girls to have the opportunity to try football in a friendly and fun setting.

Paul Greig, Midlothian Football Development Officer says, “Football is a fantastic opportunity for young females to stay active and enjoy team sport in a fun and safe environment. We are starting to see huge growth in the girls and women’s game and that success is transferring to the elite level with our senior national team making their first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup."

In Midlothian we are lucky to have out very own football women's sporting talent, Paul elaborated, "Local Penicuik girl Claire Emslie, who currently plays professional football for Manchester City and Scotland grew up and played in Midlothian from an early age. It is fantastic for young female athletes across the country and even regionally to see a pathway right to the top of the professional game. It now allows them to dream big and reach their true potential. Claire is an inspiration and great role model for all aspiring young people in Midlothian. Get involved today and your journey, just like Claire’s can start by playing football in Midlothian!”
